This is the village of the popes. One stone’s throw away from Rome, on the hills of Castelli Romani and on the edge of a volcanic crater full of water
Lake Albano, Castel Gandolfo is the perfect mixture of Culture, Religion and Nature. With its archaeological finds and Renaissance villas, Castel Gandolfo has been, since the beginning of the 1600s, the summer residence of the pontiffs, surrounded by forests and evergreen meadows, right on the lake.
THE POPE PALACE – It is a must to stop at Piazza della Libertà, a space that Bernini embellished with one of his famous fountains, dominated by the Apostolic Palace and its gardens: 400 hectares of well-kept Italian park overlooking the lake.
FOOD – You have to taste the local gastronomy, which has exalted the barbel, the trout, the pike, the eel, the perch and the frying of lattarini. But also roast pork, cold cuts and cheeses typical of the Roman countryside, and peaches, so good to be called “cheeks”, firm, juicy, sweet. All washed down
with the DOC Colli Albani wine, which the volcanic soil rich in salts and the lake microclimate made it excellent. You have to taste!
